Germany: Julian Nagelsmann resigns after World Cup failure
Thunderbolt in German football. Julian Nagelsmann is no longer the head coach of Germany. The 38-year-old tactician has decided to step down with immediate effect, just days after Die Mannschaft's elimination from the World Cup.
Julian Nagelsmann leaves the German national team following their exit in the round of 16 at the World Cup. According to several German media outlets, including BILD, the decision was made this Thursday and an official statement from the German Football Association (DFB) is expected in the coming hours.
Appointed as Germany’s head coach in September 2023, Nagelsmann was tasked with revitalizing a squad that had lost its momentum. Despite a promising build-up to the tournament, Germany fell short of expectations, leading to the young manager's departure.
Jürgen Klopp the favorite to take over the national team
One name already stands out as his likely successor: Jürgen Klopp. The former Liverpool manager, currently serving in a football leadership role with the Red Bull group, is reportedly the DFB’s number one target.
According to recent reports, Klopp is open to the idea of taking charge of the national team. His contract with Red Bull is said to include a verbal clause allowing him to leave if offered the Germany job. Concrete talks between the parties could begin soon.
