Guinea-Bissau: Luís Boa Morte leaves the Djurtus bench
Luís Boa Morte

Luís Boa Morte has officially stepped down as head coach of Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, following the Djurtus' defeat to Gabon (0-2) in Casablanca. The announcement was made by the federation.

The 47-year-old Portuguese coach confirmed his departure after the friendly fixtures against Burundi and Gabon, held on June 6 and 9 in Morocco during the FIFA window. Appointed in March 2024, Boa Morte was tasked with qualifying Guinea-Bissau for AFCON 2025 and rejuvenating the squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. In the end, his stint lasted just over a year, marked by disappointing results.

A mixed record with the Djurtus

The Portuguese tactician was in charge for twelve matches across all competitions, recording just a single win, four draws, and seven defeats. That lone victory came in the opening AFCON 2025 qualifier against Eswatini (1-0) on September 5, 2024. However, this brief spark failed to hide the team's struggles, especially considering Guinea-Bissau had secured four consecutive AFCON qualifications prior to his arrival. Under Boa Morte's leadership, the Djurtus failed to qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations, ending a historic run for Guinea-Bissau, who hadn't missed the tournament since 2017.

The loss to Gabon (0-2) in their last friendly in Casablanca proved the final blow for the coach. At the end of his spell, Boa Morte leaves Guinea-Bissau fifth in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group with six points, trailing Burkina Faso by five, who sit in second. Egypt comfortably tops the group, but the Djurtus still have four matches left to try and reignite their campaign and chase a historic qualification.
