With 4 matchdays remaining in the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, they are in second place, alongside Sudan, with 12 points, just one point behind the leader, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The AFCON winner is compelled to secure 12 points in its next four matches against Sudan, the DRC, South Sudan, and Mauritania to qualify for the World Cup, without worrying about the results of other Group B encounters.

Their mission will not be easy, especially with a perilous trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo on matchday 8.
It's a tough task for the new coach Pape Thiaw to find the right formula that will enable the 2021 AFCON winner to partake in the global event.
It is worth noting that Senegal currently holds the 3rd place in the ranking of the best second-placed teams in the groups.
As a reminder, FIFA allows the 4 best second-placed teams to compete in an African playoff and then an international playoff to vie for the World Cup qualifying ticket.
