Jordan Torunarigha leaves Gent and signs with Hamburg
Jordan Torunarigha has officially and freely signed with Hamburg SV on June 11, 2025, following the end of his contract with Gent in Belgium. The Nigerian international returns to Germany to reignite his career in the top flight.
After his contract with Gent expired, Torunarigha opted for newly promoted Bundesliga side Hamburg SV, turning down offers from other suitors such as Anderlecht and Marseille. The deal runs for three seasons, through 2028, and involved no transfer fee for the Buffalos.
"Jordan became a key and very influential player during his time at Gent. We have closely followed his progress both on and off the pitch, and we are delighted that he has chosen to take the next step in his career with HSV," said Claus Costa, Hamburg SV’s sporting director.
Jordan Torunarigha returns to his roots
Several clubs—including Anderlecht, Marseille, and FC Cologne—were in the race to sign the 27-year-old defender. But Hamburg moved fastest, thanks in part to the connection between Torunarigha and Stefan Kuntz, Hamburg’s current sporting director and former coach of Germany’s U21 national team, where Torunarigha played before opting to represent Nigeria at senior level.
A product of the Hertha Berlin academy, Torunarigha made 73 Bundesliga appearances before his move to Belgium. At Gent, he established himself as a cornerstone of the defense with 145 matches played. During the 2024-2025 season, he featured in 41 games across all competitions for Gent, including nine outings in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
