Jose Mourinho Handed Four-Match Ban and Fine for Controversial Comments on Turkish Referees
Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has been hit with 4 match suspension and 44,000 dollar fine by the Turkish Football Federation following his controversial remarks about turkish referees after 0 - 0 draw against Galatasaray.
The Incident
The 62 year old Portuguese coach was furious after the Istanbul derby and made strong criticisms of Turkish referees. While he praised Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic for officiating the match, he took aim at the 4th official, saying: “If you were the referee, this match would be a disaster.”
He also commented on Galatasaray's bench reactions comparing their protests to players “jumping like monkeys.”
His remarks sparked widespread controversy with accusations of offensive language and unsportsmanlike behavior.
TFF's Sanctions
The Turkish Football Federation cited Mourinho for:
- Derogatory and offensive statements towards turkish referees.
- Accusing turkish football of chaos and disorder.
- Using language that could incite violence and fan incidents.
As result Mourinho received:
- 2 match ban from the dressing room and dugout.
- Additional 2 match suspension for inappropriate comments during the press conference.
- 1.6 million turkish lira fine (42,616 euro / 44,000 dollar).
Fenerbahce's Response
Fenerbahce strongly defended Mourinho, claiming his words were "taken out of context." The club emphasized that his comments were not racist but expressed frustration over referee decisions.
Appeal Process
Fenerbahce has appealed the decision and if unsuccessful, Mourinho'll miss the next 3 league match in addition to already serving one suspension.
