Atletico Madrid host Barcelona at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday 8 November 2026 in a crucial La Liga encounter that could reshape the title race.

As Diego Simeone's men prepare to challenge Hansi Flick's league leaders, the fixture brings back memories of some of Spanish football's greatest goalscorers.

However, one name stands far above the rest, Lionel Messi who scored an extraordinary 32 goals against Atletico Madrid during his Barcelona career.

According to Transfermarkt's historical head to head records, the Argentine legend holds a commanding 16 goal advantage over his nearest challenger.

Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid: Top five scorers in history

Across all official competitions, the five leading goalscorers in this fixture are:

1. Lionel Messi (Barcelona): 32 goals
2. Cesar Rodriguez (Barcelona): 16 goals
3. Paco Campos (Atletico Madrid): 13 goals
4. Laszlo Kubala (Barcelona): 12 goals
5. Hristo Stoichkov (Barcelona): 12 goals

Messi's record is particularly impressive considering the defensive reputation Atletico developed under Simeone.

The eight time Ballon d'Or winner repeatedly delivered decisive performances against the Madrid club including his memorable free kick in Barcelona's 1-0 victory in March 2018.

That strike was also the 600th goal of his professional career.

Messi's La Liga record is equally remarkable

When considering Spanish league encounters alone, Messi remains the undisputed leader with 26 goals, according to La Liga's official historical statistics.

Cesar Rodriguez follows with 14 league goals while Atletico's most prolific scorer in the fixture, Paco Campos, registered 12.

Fernando Torres also established himself as a notable figure in this rivalry, scoring eight league goals against Barcelona.

The distinction between league only and all competition figures is important when comparing the historical records.

Barcelona's overall advantage in the fixture has also been evident in previous head to head encounters examined by Foot Africa.

Can Ademola Lookman write another chapter?

The upcoming meeting also provides an opportunity for Nigerian international Ademola Lookman to add to his personal record against Barcelona.

The Atletico Madrid forward has already delivered decisive contributions against the Catalan giants in 2026.

He scored during Atlético's 4-0 Copa del Rey victory in February, before finding the net again in the Champions League quarter final second leg in April.

Although Lookman remains a long way from the extraordinary historical totals established by Messi and the game's other legends, his recent performances have already made him an important figure in this modern rivalry.

With Barcelona defending their position at the top of La Liga and Atletico looking to close the gap, Sunday's encounter offers another opportunity for a new goalscoring hero to emerge.
