Liverpool's Contract Saga: Ben Foster Defends Club Amid Salah & Van Dijk Speculation
As the future of Liverpool star Mohamed Salah continues to dominate the headlines, former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has entered the debate, defending the Reds' handling of Salah and Virgil van Dijk's contract renewals.
Both Salah and Van Dijk are out of contract at the end of the season, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is also a free agent, with strong links to Real Madrid. Speaking on his podcast, Foster denied claims that Liverpool delayed the negotiations, insisting that the club made offers well in advance.
“Liverpool Didn’t Delay" The Players Did
Foster claimed Liverpool approached Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold at least two years before their contracts were due to expire—around summer 2023.
"Anyone who thinks Liverpool dragged their feet is wrong," Foster said. "I’m 100% sure the club reached out to their key players early. If any of them deny that, I challenge them to prove otherwise."
His comments have stirred controversy, especially as Van Dijk recently hinted at progress in talks, while Salah has repeatedly denied receiving any formal renewal offers—contradicting reports of a near-agreement after financial compromises.
Salah’s Potential Exit & Liverpool’s Replacement Plan
With Salah’s departure increasingly likely, Liverpool are reportedly eyeing Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman as a potential successor. The Nigerian winger has impressed in Serie A with his pace, creativity, and versatility, making him a viable candidate to fill the void left by the Egyptian icon.
While Lookman lacks Salah’s experience, his rapid development and adaptability could offer Liverpool a fresh attacking dynamic. A move for the 26-year-old would signal a long-term investment rather than a direct like-for-like replacement.
As speculation swirls, Foster’s remarks add fuel to the debate over Liverpool’s contract management—and whether the players or the club bear responsibility for the stalled negotiations.
