Manchester City have reportedly begun mapping out their post Guardiola era with Vincent Kompany emerging as the leading candidate to take over when the club’s historic partnership with Pep Guardiola eventually ends.

According to Mundo Deportivo citing Sky Sports Germany, City still view Kompany — their former captain & current Bayern Munich manager — as the ideal successor to Guardiola regardless of Bayern’s decision to extend his contract until Jun 2029.

The long term vision at the Etihad

Guardiola’s tenure which began in 2016 has delivered unprecedented dominance:

  • Multiple Premier League titles
  • Domestic cups
  • The club’s first UEFA Champions League crown.

Yet reports indicate City’s hierarchy are planning well in advance for seamless transition when the 53 year old eventually decides to leave.

"The renewal doesn’t change City’s internal view, Kompany remains on the shortlist for the future" the report states.

Bayern’s stance and Kompany’s rise

Bayern Munich, meanwhile are eager to protect their asset. Sporting director Christoph Freund refused to confirm or deny whether Kompany’s new contract includes release clause fueling speculation that pathway back to Manchester might still exist.
