Morocco: Aguerd and Ez Abde ruled out of the World Cup—what the Atlas Lions lose and gain
Salaheddine Bassir spoke at length about Morocco’s opening match in the World Cup against Brazil in an exclusive interview with Africa Foot. The 1998 World Cup hero analyzes the impact of the Moroccan squad’s absentees and what the substitutes could bring to the table.
Salaheddine Bassir believes that Nayef Aguerd’s absence changes the defensive equation. “Aguerd brings a lot of pace when it comes to covering and defensive compensation. With Marouane Saadane, the style shifts: we gain more experience, better positioning, and a sharper reading of the game. That’s why Morocco will need to double down on defensive discipline and close down space to avoid direct duels with Brazil’s attackers.”
On the wing, the absence of Abde Ezzalzouli calls for tactical adjustments. “Ezzalzouli offers speed, dribbling, and the ability to win one-on-ones. With Amine Sbai, we might see a different profile—someone more comfortable between the lines and in tight spaces. That could give Brahim Diaz and Azzedine Ounahi more freedom to orchestrate play.”
The Atlas Lions’ all-time leading scorer believes his country boasts a deep talent pool and can cope with these setbacks.
