Morocco sets sights on first AFCON U17 trophy
The Africa U-17 Cup of Nations (AFCON U17) 2025 kicks off this Sunday, March 30, in Morocco. For the Atlas Lion Cubs, this edition represents a golden opportunity to secure their first continental title in this category.
After coming close to glory in 2023 by finishing as runners-up, the young Moroccans are determined to make history in the 2025 edition, especially in front of their home crowd.
A journey of constant progress
Historically, the journey of the Atlas Lion Cubs in this competition has been marked by ups and downs. Their first participation dates back to the AFCON U17 2013, where they reached the semi-finals, an encouraging performance for a debut appearance. That same year, they also participated in the U17 World Cup, reaching the round of 16 before being eliminated by Ivory Coast.
In 2022, the team won the North African Football Union (UNAF) tournament, thus securing their qualification for the AFCON U17 2023 in Algeria. During this edition, the Moroccans shone by defeating teams such as Nigeria and Algeria. The Atlas Lion Cubs reached the final, where they were beaten 2-1 by Senegal's Lion Cubs in the 83rd minute.
AFCON U17 2025: Meticulous preparation for a clear goal
Under the guidance of coach Nabil Baha, the Atlas Lion Cubs have set up rigorous preparations for this competition. They notably won the Antalya Youth Cup in Turkey in February 2025, a tournament that allowed them to gain valuable experience against international opponents.
"We have prepared our players in the best possible way and participated in several tournaments," coach Nabil Baha recalled this Saturday, March 29, on the eve of the tournament's start.
For the AFCON U17 2025, Morocco is placed in group A alongside Uganda, Zambia, and Tanzania. Baha and the Atlas Lion Cubs are aware of their mission in this tournament and do not intend to underestimate any opponent.
"Morocco's group is not easy at all. All African teams play good football with high technical quality, and these will not be easy matches. Playing at home in front of the Moroccan crowd is an additional motivation to deliver a strong performance," said the Moroccan coach. "Our main goal is obviously to win the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in this category. We are aware of the mission that lies ahead on the field, but the squad is ready to make a difference," assures Nabil Baha.
