Real Betis beat Elche thanks to Riquelme and Bartra
Real Betis secured a valuable 2-0 win away to Elche on Sunday in the 12th round of LaLiga. After being held in check by the hosts for much of the match, the Andalusians found a way through in the final ten minutes thanks to Rodrigo Riquelme and Marc Bartra.
A goalless first half
Despite having slightly more possession (52%), Betis failed to turn their dominance into goals before the break. Elche also struggled to pose a threat, managing just one shot on target over the course of the match.
The two teams therefore went into the dressing rooms level at 0-0. Elche did, however, have to make a change at half-time, with Aleix Houary making way for Giorgi Diangana.
Riquelme and Bartra break the deadlock
Betis had to wait until the 81st minute to take the lead. Introduced a few minutes earlier in place of Abde Ezzalzouli, Rodrigo Riquelme opened the scoring, rewarding the visitors’ attacking efforts. Eight minutes later, Marc Bartra scored the Andalusians’ second goal to put the result beyond doubt.
The statistics underline Betis’ superiority in dangerous situations. The visitors hit the target nine times, compared with just once for Elche. They also completed 530 passes, against 487 for their opponents. Elche goalkeeper Matías Dituro had to make seven saves, while his opposite number, Álvaro Vallés, made just one. With this 2-0 win, Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis leave the Martínez Valero Stadium with a victory secured in the final quarter of the match.
