Spotlight on Benedict McCarthy's mixed start with Kenya's Harambee Stars

Benedict McCarthy took the helm of Kenya's Harambee Stars in March 2025, just days before the 5th and 6th rounds of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The former South African international and ex-assistant coach at Manchester United, now 47, was appointed head coach with the mission to revitalize the Kenyan national team and lead them to new heights.

McCarthy's debut was marked by mixed results during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. On March 20, 2025, Kenya faced Gambia at the Alassane Ouattara Olympic Stadium in Ebimpé, Ivory Coast. In a match full of twists and turns, the two teams ended in a 3-3 draw. After trailing 2-0, the Harambee Stars showed resilience by leveling the score, thanks to goals from Michael Olunga and Mohamed Bajaber. A stoppage-time equalizer by William Wilson secured Kenya a valuable point.

Three days later, on March 23, Kenya hosted Gabon for the sixth round of qualifiers. Unfortunately, the Harambee Stars fell 2-1 to the Gabonese Panthers. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a brace for Gabon, while Michael Olunga pulled one back for Kenya in the 62nd minute. This defeat dropped Kenya to fourth place in Group F, with five points from six matches, jeopardizing their qualification hopes.

These mixed results highlight the challenges McCarthy faces. While the draw against Gambia showcased the team's ability to overcome adversity, the loss to Gabon exposed defensive weaknesses and the need for better tactical cohesion. Furthermore, the inconsistency in performances could be attributed to an adaptation period for both the new coach and the players to his methods and playing philosophy.

Benni McCarthy's early days at the helm of the Harambee Stars mark a period of transition and adjustment. To keep their 2026 World Cup qualification hopes alive, Kenya must quickly find greater stability and effectiveness.
