In their preparations for the summer 2026 transfer window, the Manchester United board has been carefully weighing their options for strengthening the midfield. Yet, after months of compiling a lengthy list of potential targets, the club has now been compelled to remove one of the Premier League's most promising talents from contention.

There was great interest from Manchester United!

As reported by The Athletic, United have formally stepped away from negotiations for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali. What ultimately drove the decision was the staggering financial demands attached to the Italian a price the club has deemed too steep to pursue.

The situation at Old Trafford has left Manchester United with little choice but to overhaul their midfield. Casemiro has already confirmed his departure, while Manuel Ugarte's growing frustration with his current role has raised the very real possibility that he too could be on his way out. That leaves a glaring void in the heart of the squad—one that demands the arrival of at least two elite midfielders.

But financial reality looms large over any such ambitions. With strict profit and sustainability regulations to contend with, the club cannot afford to pour the vast majority of its resources into a single signing. That sobering constraint has proven decisive, even in the case of Sandro Tonali—a player United had set their sights on as far back as last summer.
