Four African teams secured their spots on Monday for the final stage of the U-20 World Cup, which will take place in Chile from September 27 to October 19, 2025.
Which African countries have qualified for the U-20 World Cup?
Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa are now officially through to the FIFA U-20 World Cup, after reaching the semi-finals of the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. The tournament will conclude on May 18.
Morocco punched their ticket by knocking out Sierra Leone, thanks to an own goal by Amara Keita during extra time. The score was 0-0 after regular time. The match was played at the Air Defense Stadium in Cairo.
Nigeria also clinched qualification by defeating defending champions Senegal in a dramatic penalty shootout (4-2), after a fiercely contested match that ended goalless in regulation.
South Africa secured their place in the final four by edging out DR Congo with a hard-fought 1-0 victory, wrapping up a tense and evenly-matched encounter.
Finally, hosts Egypt sealed their qualification by overcoming Ghana at the end of a spectacular match. The teams were level at 2-2 after regular time, before Egypt triumphed in the penalty shootout (5-4) at the new Suez Stadium.
