U17 World Cup (F): Botswana, Nigeria, and Kenya Take the Lead
The second round of qualifiers for the 2025 U17 Women's World Cup officially kicked off this Saturday, March 8, with the first leg matches. Botswana and Kenya shone by defeating Algeria and Uganda respectively. Here are the results from this opening day.
South Africa 1-3 Nigeria
The South African U17 women's team hosted Nigeria's Flamingos at Lucas Moripe Stadium. The Nigerian Flamingos started the match strong in this clash. Moshood and Chidi scored the first two goals of the match (20', 41'). After the break, Malebana narrowed the gap for South Africa (47'). In the 67th minute, Chidi struck again with a brace (67') to seal Nigeria's victory.
Uganda 0-2 Kenya
Kenya outclassed Uganda in this East African derby. The Junior Starlets won 2-0 thanks to Edinah Nasipwondi (36') and Joan Ogola (45+1'). The Kenyans take the lead before the return leg in Nairobi.
Botswana 2-1 Algeria
Botswana pulled off a surprise by beating Algeria 2-1. The two opponents were level at the end of the first half. Algerian Hanane Sehouli opened the scoring in the 20th minute. After conceding the first goal, Botswana's Young Mares turned the tables thanks to Keletso Lesotlho (65') who equalized, and Amogelang Samantha Sebotho who secured the team's victory.
Sierra Leone 2-2 Guinea
The match between Sierra Leone and Guinea ended in a 2-2 draw. Both teams delivered a balanced performance, each showcasing moments of offensive brilliance.
