Real Madrid hosts Arsenal next Wednesday (April 16) at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid for the second leg of the 2024/2025 Champions League quarter-finals.

Carlo Ancelotti's team faces a daunting challenge to overturn a heavy 3-0 defeat suffered in the first leg.

The "Merengue's" chances of securing a semi-final spot in this 70th edition of the European competition seem slim, a feat that the Spanish magazine "Sport" deems almost impossible.

Can Real Madrid pull off a historic comeback?

Despite this challenging situation, the royal club, record holders for Champions League victories (15 titles), maintains hope of a "comeback" against the "Gunners." Real supporters dream of seeing their team replicate past feats, like the comebacks against PSG, Chelsea, and Manchester City in recent years.

The Champions League, in its current format since the 1992/1993 season, has been marked by several historic comebacks after three-goal defeats in the first leg. Here are the clubs that managed to bridge such a gap, not forgetting Barcelona's legendary comeback against PSG:

  • Deportivo La Coruña: In the 2003-2004 Champions League, the Spanish team lost 1-4 to AC Milan in the first leg. However, in the return leg, Deportivo pulled off the feat by winning 4-0, thus qualifying for the semi-finals.

  • AS Roma: In the quarter-finals of the 2017-2018 Champions League, the Italian team suffered a 1-4 defeat to Barcelona in the first leg. However, the "Wolves" of Rome turned the tables in the return leg, winning 3-0 and qualifying for the semi-finals thanks to the away goals rule.

  • Liverpool: In 2018-2019, after Barcelona's 3-0 victory against Liverpool in the first leg, Catalan supporters thought they had one foot in the final. But Liverpool achieved an incredible feat by winning 4-0 at Anfield in the return leg, thus eliminating Barcelona and reaching the final.
