Winfried Schäfer Calls for Unity as Black Stars Aim for 2026 World Cup Redemption
Ghana’s Black Stars Technical Director, Winfried Schafer's urged Ghanaians to rally behind the national team despite their disappointing failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON. Schafer who was appointed to help revive the squad, emphasized the need for unity and long term commitment to rebuilding Ghanaian football.
Schäfer’s Plea for Support
“I know we are not very happy because the team didn’t make it to AFCON but please give us the support” Schafer said during meeting with ghana’s minister for sports and recreation. He acknowledged the emotional toll of the AFCON miss but insisted that teamwork not individual talent's the key to success.
Schafer aded “Not the best players win matches but the best team win when all play together. Nobody should say I'm from Real Madrid, I'm from Arsenal. no, everybody's to be proud to wear the shirt of Ghana”
2026 World Cup Ambitions
Despite the AFCON setback, Schafer remains optimistic about Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification chances. Speaking to GFA media, he revealed his determination to guide the Black Stars to the global stage.
“I was bit surprised when President Kurt Okraku called me for meeting in Manchester but it was very good discussion. We've to go to the World Cup in 2026. If we work together I believe it's possible” he said.
Ghana currently sits 2nd in Group I with 9 point & will face Chad on 21 March at the Accra Sports Stadium followed by crucial encounter against Madagascar on 24 March in Morocco.
Schäfer’s Vision for the Black Stars
Schafer who previously coached Cameroon & Jamaica expressed his excitement about working alongside Otto Addo to rebuild the national team. “Ghana's deep passion for football and I'm happy to be part of this journey” he ended.
