World Cup 2026 – DR Congo: Bakambu ready to give up a calf or a leg for the nation
Cédric Bakambu is gearing up to play his very first World Cup with DR Congo, and one thing is certain: he's fired up for this new challenge.
The iconic Leopards striker has netted 21 goals in 69 international appearances. He’s coming off an average season with Real Betis, where he scored 4 goals and delivered 3 assists in 27 matches. Still, that hasn’t stopped him from boldly stating his ambitions for the tournament.

The Ivry-sur-Seine native sent out a strong message in an interview published on FIFA’s official website: "In our group, there may not necessarily be a big star, but we’re all united and that’s our strength," he declared.

He went on to add: "If we have to lose a calf or a leg, we’ll do it, as long as it’s for the nation." It’s a statement brimming with motivation from Bakambu, as the Leopards aim to outdo their first World Cup appearance, which ended with three defeats in 1974 in West Germany.
Drawn into Group K, the Congolese side will face Portugal on June 17, Colombia on June 24, before taking on Uzbekistan on June 28. The goal is to secure a historic qualification for the knockout stages.
