Wydad Hold Emergency Meeting, Opt to Keep Mokwena Until Further Notice
Wydad AC have officially decided to maintain their trust in South African coach Rulani Mokwena despite mounting pressure from fans calling for his dismissal due to the team’s recent slump.
Wydad winless in last 5 matches
The Moroccan giants have failed to win any of their last 5 fixtures across the Botola Pro and Throne Cup severely jeopardizing their hopes of securing spot in next season’s CAF champions league. Wydad now trail rivals AS FAR by 4 points putting additional pressure on the current coaching staff.
According to reports, Wydad’s board held emergency meeting to assess the current crisis & evaluate the root causes behind the team’s inconsistent performances.
Contract clause under pressure
Mokwena’s contract reportedly includes key clause requiring 2nd place finish in the league a target that now appears in jeopardy. Nonetheless the club has decided to postpone any decision regarding his dismissal until the end of the season based on results in the remaining rounds.
Who could replace Mokwena?
Despite elimination from the Throne Cup Round of 16 and recent draw against Raja, Wydad will keep Mokwena in charge particularly given his refusal to part ways amicably.
Should Mokwena leave before the 2025 FIFA club world cup, Mohamed Amine Benhachem's expected to take over and lead the team at the prestigious tournament, set to take place in the United States this summer.
Mokwena signed 3 year contract last summer with 45,000 dollar monthly salary making him the highest paid coach in the Moroccan league this season.
