π΄ FLASH: Guinea given lifeline for AFCON 2025?
Eliminated on the pitch during the qualifiers, Guinea may yet find hope for a spot at AFCON 2025. The Guinean Football Federation (FGF) has officially announced that it has renewed its appeal against Tanzania, just months after seeing the Taifa Stars claim a 1-0 victory in the final round of qualifiers in November 2024.
The protest hinges on an administrative detail: Tanzanian defender Muhamed Ibrahim Ame was brought on wearing a different shirt number than the one registered on the official match sheet.
Guinea is hoping to turn this error into a win by forfeit, which would see them qualify automatically in place of the Taifa Stars.
Initial rejection, but an appeal underway
At first, the Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rejected the complaint, ruling it "admissible in form," but "ill-founded" on substance.
Undeterred, the FGF immediately announced its intention to appeal the decision.
This appeal is now official: the federation has specified it will appear before the CAF Appeal Board in Cairo on June 11.
A decision eagerly awaited in Conakry
In a statement published on its website, the FGF, currently under interim management, announced that a delegation will travel to Egypt to defend its case.
Hope remains high in Conakry. If the verdict goes in their favor, Guinea would join Group C alongside Nigeria, Tunisia, and Uganda.
