2026 World Cup - Algeria: Djamel Amani wants to see this key player benched against Switzerland
On the eve of the round of 32 clash between Switzerland and Algeria, Djamel Amani is pulling no punches, launching a fierce attack on Algeria's backline and calling for major changes among the Fennecs' defenders.
Having booked their spot in the round of 32, Algeria are relishing their journey so far. However, in an interview with Africafoot, former Fennecs midfielder and 1990 Africa Cup of Nations champion Djamel Amani refuses to be content with just the results and highlights what he sees as an alarming weakness ahead of the showdown with Switzerland.
A defense seen as far too naive
"We're happy to have qualified for the round of 32. The first objective is achieved—it's a positive thing," Amani concedes at first. But that's where the praise ends.
The draw against Austria left him deeply frustrated, especially in the way it played out:
"We made too many defensive errors. Our backline is very naive and not solid at all. With just three or four touches, opponents are inside our box. Austria's first two goals were down to stupid mistakes."
Mandi in the crosshairs
In this bleak picture, Aïssa Mandi is taking most of the heat.
"Mandi shouldn't play against Switzerland. Chergui or Belaïd should take his place," the former international says bluntly.
He's convinced that Samir Chergui or Zineddine Belaïd would provide more solidity and pace at the back.
Amani goes further, using some harsh words for a player long considered a mainstay:
"Chergui, for example, you won't get past him so easily. And he's rarely beaten for pace. Mandi, honestly, looks like a grandfather out there. He really shouldn't be in the Algeria squad anymore. You can't let sentimentality get in the way."
