2026 World Cup: Jürgen Klopp launches fresh attack
The cooling breaks introduced to protect players during the 2026 World Cup have now become the center of a heated debate. Jürgen Klopp denounces what he sees as the commercial hijacking of football and takes direct aim at the tournament’s organization.
The cooling breaks were meant to shield players from the American heat. Instead, they are turning into the first major controversy of the 2026 World Cup. As a pundit for DAZN, Jürgen Klopp did not hold back, criticizing these game stoppages as having lost their original purpose.

His statement landed like a bombshell:
“Football is being held hostage by executives sitting in air-conditioned offices. They present these breaks as a shield for player welfare, a noble sword against the heat. In reality, it's nothing more than a gilded cage built for the sponsors.”
The German went even further, condemning a commercial drift that, in his view, threatens the very soul of the sport:
“A World Cup match should flow like a river. Instead, we’re building dams right in the middle so commercials can run.”
Klopp then raised the question everyone seems to be dodging:
“Who does the World Cup really serve? The fans? The players? Or the advertisers?”
He warns that football risks becoming “just background music for an advertising show.” A harsh warning, and one that’s hard to ignore.
