Adebayor blasts Carragher for his AFCON comments!

Togolese soccer icon Emmanuel Adebayor has reacted strongly to former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher's recent statements about Mohamed Salah's chances of winning the Ballon d'Or.

Carragher had said that even if Salah won the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), it would not, in his opinion, be a major international competition.

In an exclusive interview with "AfricaSoccer", Adebayor did not mince his words:

"Jamie Carragher's comments are a profound lack of respect, not only for the African Cup of Nations, but for all African peoples and people of African descent."

He added: "I'm not surprised by this kind of ignorant comment. We always hear these same criticisms when the African Cup of Nations is mentioned."

The former Arsenal striker continued, "If these players who make the big European leagues shine are considered the best in the world, how can we underestimate the African Cup of Nations when they are taking part?"

went on to highlight the excellence of African players in Europe's top five leagues, citing stars such as Mohamed Salah, Mbemo, Marmoush, Jackson, Partey, Kudus, Iwobi, and many others.

He added: "In Germany, Giraud and Amoura. In France, Hakimi, Guissan and Traoré. In Spain, Inaki Williams and Brahim Diaz. In Italy, Lookman and Boulaye Dia. In Turkey, Osimhen.

Continuing his acerbic response to Carragher , Adebayor concluded: "If you're going to accept criticism, it has to come from those who have actually experienced things. And Carragher is not one of those who can give us lessons about the African Cup of Nations."

Finally, the former Togo international concluded with a personal touch: "I've played against some of the best defenders in the world in the Premier League, and Carragher, sorry, is not one of them."

Carragher's statements provoked a wave of criticism among African legends such as John Obi Mikel, El Hadji Diouf, Jay-Jay Okocha, Ahmed Hassan, Mido and others, who denounced an unfair downplaying of the AFCON.
