Tunisia denied a place in AFCON quarter finals in dramatic fashion after Mali struck deep into stoppage time to force 1-1 draw in their Round of 16 clash at Africa Cup of Nations 2025 in Morocco.

Firas Chaouat appeared to have sealed victory for the Carthage Eagles when he headed Tunisia into the lead late in second half, only for Mali to respond moments later from the penalty spot and keep their tournament hopes alive.

Tunisia dominate but struggle to break Mali down

The first half ended goalless despite Tunisia’s clear control of possession. Sami Trabelsi’s side dominated the ball enjoying nearly 70% possession but failed to register single shot on target before the break.

Mali’s task became even harder in the 26 minute when defender Woyo Coulibaly was shown straight red card following reckless challenge leaving the Eagles of Mali with 10 men for more than hour.

Despite the numerical advantage, Tunisia found it difficult to turn possession into clear chances, with Mali sitting deep and defending in numbers.

Chaouat breaks the deadlock late on

Tunisia’s pressure finally paid off in the 88 minute when Firas Chaouat rose highest inside the penalty area to head home precise cross sparking celebrations on the Tunisian bench and in stands.

The goal looked set to send the Carthage Eagles through to the quarter finals where Senegal were waiting.

Late Penalty rescues Mali

However the drama was far from over. In stoppage time, Mali were awarded penalty after a foul inside the box and Lassine Sinayoko kept his composure to convert from the spot stunning Tunisia and forcing the match level once again.
