Tanzania approaches the Africa Cup of Nations with a story shaped by rarity and perseverance. Long absent from the continental stage, the Taifa Stars have had a stop-start journey, marked by sporadic qualifications and campaigns that often ended in the group stage. Their first appearance, back in 1980, was not enough to establish the country among the tournament regulars.

It would take nearly forty years before Tanzania reemerged on the AFCON map, highlighting the structural and sporting challenges faced across generations. Since then, each qualification has been celebrated as an event in itself, even if results have yet to signal a major competitive breakthrough.

Qualified for the 2025 edition in Morocco, the Taifa Stars now have the chance to write a different story. This new participation is both a challenge and a beacon of hope for a squad eager for continental recognition.

Tanzania's AFCON appearances:

  • 1980 (Nigeria): group stage
  • 2019 (Egypt): group stage
  • 2023 (Ivory Coast): group stage
  • 2025 (Morocco): qualified, competition upcoming
