Barça: despite his mistake, Szczęsny can count on Hansi Flick
FC Barcelona largely dominated Racing Santander, but the match left a small blemish on Wojciech Szczęsny's performance. Coming on in the second half in place of Joan García, who was slightly injured, the Polish goalkeeper played his first minutes of the season in unexpected circumstances.
Szczęsny caught out by his decision
Szczęsny came on with Barça leading 4-1. When the final whistle sounded, the Catalans had won 7-2. In between, however, the Pole was involved in Racing's second goal. In the 65th minute, Szczęsny received a pass from a teammate as an opposing player was quickly closing him down. Instead of immediately getting rid of the ball, the former Juventus goalkeeper tried to find a solution.
The decision backfired on him. Yassir Zabiri won the ball back before sending it into the net. A mistake with no real consequence for the result, but one that obviously did not go unnoticed, especially because competition has increased in the goalkeeping department with the arrival of Dominik Livaković.
Flick does not change his pecking order
After the match, Hansi Flick was asked about any possible consequences for Szczęsny. The German coach immediately confirmed the Pole's position.
We have made our decision. “Tek” is our second-choice goalkeeper and, as I have already said, everyone makes mistakes. It happens.
Flick nevertheless acknowledged that the incident could have been avoided. He believes that Szczęsny quickly understood that he had put himself in a difficult situation, but refuses to make it a bigger issue than it is. The German coach mainly used the opportunity to reiterate his demands of his entire squad: maximum concentration and fewer mistakes.
