Champions League or Confederation Cup? Find out Al Ahly's official continental path

The Confederation of African Football CAF has officially shut down a proposal to expand the number of teams participating in its premier club competitions.

According to a report by the Moroccan newspaper Almountakhab, CAF refused to make any structural changes or modifications to the established formats of the CAF Champions League & the CAF Confederation Cup.

The rejection directly shoots down a formal proposal recently submitted by Hany Abo Rida, President of the Egyptian Football Association who had advocated for increasing the number of allocated spots for competing clubs.

A severe setback for Al Ahly

The Moroccan publication described CAF's decision as a "severe blow" to Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly.

After finishing outside the top two in the domestic league standings, the Red Devils were heavily relying on the proposed expansion to secure a backdoor entry into the prestigious Champions League. With the proposal officially discarded, Al Ahly's Champions League dreams are over for the upcoming campaign and they will compete in the secondary continental tournament instead.

Egypt's official continental representatives

Following CAF's firm stance on maintaining the current qualification quota, the Egyptian Football Association has officially confirmed the four clubs that will represent the nation in African competitions:

• CAF Champions League: Zamalek SC &Pyramids FC
• CAF Confederation Cup: Al Ahly SC & ZED FC
