Champions League: UEFA reveal Team of the Week after Matchday 1

After three action-packed European nights, UEFA have revealed their Team of the Week for the opening Champions League matchday.

Matchday 1 of the 2026-27 Champions League concluded on Thursday night after 18 matches and 69 goals. Shortly afterwards, UEFA’s official account unveiled the Team of the Week, featuring several expected names alongside a few notable surprises.

Champions League Team of the Week

Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid).

Defenders: Archie Brown (Fenerbahçe), Pau Torres (Aston Villa), Marc Bartra (Real Betis) and Sergiño Dest (PSV Eindhoven).

Midfielders: Martin Baturina (Como) and Martin Ødegaard (Arsenal).

Forwards: Ferran Torres (Paris Saint-Germain), Ermedin Demirovic (Stuttgart), Raphinha (Barcelona) and Michael Olise (Bayern Munich).

The XI reflects the variety of the opening round, with players selected from a wide range of clubs and leagues. European heavyweights such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, Arsenal and PSG are represented, while UEFA also rewarded standout performers from less-fancied sides.

When is Champions League Matchday 2?

The second round of league-phase fixtures will take place on October 13 and 14, 2026. Several major clashes are already on the schedule, including Atlético Madrid-Manchester United, Galatasaray-Barcelona, Roma-Real Madrid and Manchester City-Paris Saint-Germain.

After such a high-scoring opening round, the race for a place in the Top 8 and direct qualification for the round of 16 is already underway.
