Interview
Before the clash between Manchester City and Wydad AC to kick off Group G of the Club World Cup, Pep Guardiola expressed his respect for the Moroccan club and African football as a whole.
Fresh off Manchester City's 2023 European triumph, Pep Guardiola did not downplay the threat posed by Wydad Athletic Club. Ahead of the match scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the Spanish tactician praised the rise of African football, especially in North Africa:
Football has evolved all over the world. Let me give you the example of Riyad Mahrez, an exceptional Algerian player.
Guardiola also touched on Morocco's performance at the 2022 World Cup, lauding the technical and physical qualities of North African teams. Speaking about Wydad, whom he has studied closely on video, he highlighted their defensive solidity and attacking threat:
Wydad are physically strong and extremely dangerous going forward, especially with balls played in behind the defense. We have a game plan, and we're here to perform well in this Club World Cup.
Finally, Guardiola made a point to pay tribute to African footballers as a whole:
African players, whether from the north or the south, shine in Europe. Their talent is undeniable. They are special.
Manchester City will have to be wary of Wydad, who are determined to shake up the English giants in a tournament that promises to be more competitive than ever.
