Danny Namaso: “If we make it to the next AFCON, God willing, the objective is to win”

On the eve of Cameroon’s first match in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, Danny Namaso is already looking ahead to the final tournament. The Indomitable Lions striker is embracing the ambition of winning the competition if Cameroon manage to qualify.

In an interview with Canal+, Danny Namaso spoke about his attachment to Cameroon and his ambitions with the national team. The AJ Auxerre player notably recalled that his decision to represent the Indomitable Lions was a carefully considered one.

“From the beginning, I wanted to play for Cameroon,” he said. The 25-year-old also discussed the diversity of the Cameroonian squad, made up of players who grew up in the country and dual nationals: “In the team, we have players who grew up in Cameroon. We also have dual nationals.”

Namaso then set his objective for the next Africa Cup of Nations.

Before the trophy, qualification must be secured

That ambition must first go through the qualifiers. Cameroon begin their campaign this Thursday, September 24, against Comoros at Roumdé Adjia Stadium in Garoua. The Indomitable Lions will then travel to continue their campaign, with a second fixture against Congo scheduled for September 29.

For Namaso, this new international campaign comes after a period in which he gradually took on a bigger role in the Cameroonian squad. The striker, who was born in Reading, England, chose to represent Cameroon and joined the national team in March 2025.

A few months later, his focus is now on winning the title. The first step is to achieve the results needed to send Cameroon to AFCON 2027. Only then can the ambition expressed by Namaso become a concrete objective: going for the continental title.
