DRC: Mbemba, Elia and Tuanzebe, architects of a historic qualification

They carried an entire nation. They shifted the fate of the Leopards in the most crucial moments. Chancel Mbemba, Meschak Elia, and Axel Tuanzebe embody the key faces behind DRC's qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Fifty-two years after their last appearance on the world stage, the DRC marks a historic comeback. A qualification built on decisive actions, led by three key men at every step of the journey.

Mbemba, the decisive captain against Cameroon

In the semi-finals of the African playoffs on November 13, 2025, Chancel Mbemba stood out as a true leader. As the match against Cameroon looked to be heading for extra time, the defender struck in the 91st minute. Off a perfectly delivered corner by Brian Cipenga, he fired the ball into the back of the net. A 1-0 victory, and the Leopards secured their place in the final.

Elia brings DRC back against Nigeria

On November 16, facing Nigeria, the Congolese side quickly fell behind. But the response was immediate. In the 32nd minute, Meschak Elia drew his team level, completely reigniting the contest. The battle continued all the way to a penalty shootout. Under immense pressure, Chancel Mbemba stepped up and converted the decisive spot-kick. With a 4-3 win, the DRC punched their ticket to the intercontinental playoffs.

Tuanzebe, the goal that set them free against Jamaica

On March 31, against Jamaica, the drama was just as intense. After a tightly contested match, both teams remained deadlocked into extra time. In the 100th minute, from yet another Brian Cipenga corner, Axel Tuanzebe appeared and slotted the ball home. A goal of liberation, a goal for the history books. The DRC triumphed 1-0 and clinched their qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Three matches, three decisive moments, three heroes. Mbemba, Elia, and Tuanzebe each, in their own way, wrote a memorable chapter in Congolese football history.
