Euro 2025 (W): Spain humiliates Portugal

Spain kicked off their Women's Euro 2025 campaign in spectacular fashion, handing Portugal a crushing 5-0 defeat on Thursday night. Montse Tomé's squad effectively wrapped up the match in the first half, already leading 4-0 at the break.

In a highly charged emotional atmosphere, with a tribute paid to Diogo Jota—who tragically passed away in a car accident earlier that morning—the Portuguese side appeared overwhelmed from the outset. Despite being without several key starters such as Aitana Bonmatí (still recovering) and Salma Paralluelo, Spain wasted no time taking control. Esther Gonzalez opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, followed by Vicky Lopez (9th), Alexia Putellas (38th), and then a brace from Gonzalez (40th).

In the second half, Portugal tried to mount a response but to no avail, conceding a fifth goal in stoppage time courtesy of Cristina Martín-Prieto (90+3). Spain thus reaffirms their status as tournament favorites, delivering a commanding statement from the very start.
