Five years after Lionel Messi’s departure, FC Barcelona is finally preparing a genuine tribute to its former star. President Joan Laporta announced that a ceremony would be organised at Camp Nou once the stadium is fully operational.

A departure that did not receive the expected tribute

Lionel Messi left FC Barcelona in the summer of 2021 after spending 21 years at the club. Despite the player’s stated desire to continue the adventure, including by suggesting the possibility of playing for free, no agreement could be reached to comply with LaLiga’s financial rules.

The Argentine then joined Paris Saint-Germain. His departure took place without a genuine ceremony in front of Barça supporters, as his farewell mainly came during a press conference. It is a situation that the Catalan club now wants to rectify.

Laporta confirms a tribute at Camp Nou

Joan Laporta announced, during a meeting with club members, that Messi could receive a tribute befitting his history with the club. “We will organise a tribute when the stadium is ready, provided he wants it,” the Barcelona president said, according to comments reported by Mundo Deportivo.

According to Laporta, the event could bring together nearly 105,000 spectators at a fully renovated Camp Nou. The Catalan president also paid tribute to Messi’s father, who died recently, praising his influence on his son’s career. The event therefore still needs to be defined precisely, but the principle of a tribute at Camp Nou has now been confirmed by the president of FC Barcelona.
