Frenkie de Jong reveals a lot about his future at Barcelona
Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong has revealed his intention to be part of Barcelona's future project and that he is very open to being part of Hans Flick's team after the success of the German coach's first season.
The Dutchman arrived at his dream team from his childhood club Ajax Amsterdam in 2019 in a deal worth €85 million, and was named the best midfielder in the Champions League that season after his team reached the final.
During the coronavirus pandemic, the Dutchman deferred his salary due to economic pressures on the club, making him currently the highest paid
He was close to leaving
In 2022, during the Xavi Hernandez era, reports emerged that Barcelona had accepted an offer from Manchester United for the services of the Dutchman, and although everyone said the deal was already done, in the end, the player stayed put and did not leave Barcelona and is now playing a key role in the team.
At the start of the 2024-2025 season, the Dutchman suffered a serious ankle injury that kept him out for half the season with Barcelona, but when he returned, he quickly became the mainstay in the center back position, replacing Marc Casado.
Contract expires in less than 12 months
The Dutchman's contract with the Catalan club expires in less than 12 months, and it seems that it will be a new task for sporting director Deco to find a new mechanism to renew this contract in light of many financial obstacles, but since he succeeded in keeping Pedri and Lamine Yamal on long-term contracts, it will be relatively easy for him to keep De Jong.
Bold statements from the Dutch star
After their match with Finland, De Jong gave important statements to VZ, saying:
I think I’m going to renew for Barca, I can’t be one hundred percent sure, but if everything goes well it will be done. My intention is to renew this summer, but we’ll see what happens. It is a negotiation and you cannot say when. The important thing is that both parties want it and I think we will reach an agreement.
