South Africa head coach Hugo Broos admitted disappointment but praised his players performance after Bafana Bafana were knocked out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following 2-1 defeat to Cameroon in the Round of 16.

The Indomitable Lions secured their quarter final place on Sunday night ending South Africa’s campaign despite strong showing from Broos side, particularly in the opening stages of the contest.

Speaking after the match, Broos felt the result did not fully reflect his team’s display.

“I think we started the game very well and created two or three chance early on,” Broos said. “At that moment, I felt we were the better team.”

The Belgian coach pointed to Cameroon’s opener as turning point suggesting it came against the run of play.

“Cameroon mainly played on the counter attack. On the goal they scored, they were a bit lucky.. the ball was blocked, fell again and they finished.”

Despite conceding Broos revealed he was satisfied with his team’s first half performance and encouraged them to maintain the same approach after the break.

However an early second half goal for Cameroon changed the dynamic of the match.

“We wanted to push in the second half but conceding so quickly was difficult. Suddenly, we had to score two goal,” he explained.

South Africa did pull one back late on and pushed hard for equaliser but Cameroon held firm in the closing stages.

“We still had chances even after making it 2-1. In the last minutes they defended very well,” Broos added. “It’s big disappointment not to qualify but I can’t be unhappy with the way we played. Cameroon deserved to go through.”
