Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has once again delivered in front of goal. On Sunday, September 13, the Gabonese striker found the net against Getafe in a 1-1 draw, helping Deportivo La Coruna leave the Coliseum with a point and maintain their unbeaten start after five matches.

Deportivo had fallen behind after Ramón Terrats opened the scoring. They had to wait until the 78th minute for Aubameyang to bring them back into the game. Following a move initiated by Yeremay, the Gabonese forward headed the ball home to level the score.

More importantly, the goal extended a run that has remained intact since the start of the campaign: Aubameyang has scored in each of the first five La Liga matchdays.

Five matches, five goals

Elche, Málaga, Valencia, Villarreal and now Getafe: Aubameyang has scored against each of those opponents. His goal at the Coliseum took his tally to five goals in five matches.

This consistency has been a feature of his season from the outset. After scoring in each of the first four matchdays, he had already set a Deportivo record by becoming the first player in the club’s history to score at least once in each of those four games. Against Getafe, he extended that run.

The goal also had a particular significance. After scoring his first four goals with his feet, Aubameyang used his head to find the net this time. It was his first headed goal of the season.

His contribution goes beyond his goalscoring. Against Villarreal, he scored once and provided two assists in Deportivo’s 3-2 victory. After five matchdays, his tally stands at five goals and two assists.

Fifth in the La Liga scoring charts

That level of efficiency has taken him into the upper reaches of the standings. With five goals, Aubameyang is fifth in the La Liga scoring charts, behind Raphinha, Kylian Mbappé, Sergio Camello and Lamine Yamal, who have all scored six times after the fifth matchday.

The Gabonese striker is therefore just one goal behind the four players at the top. On his return to La Liga, he has quickly established himself among the league’s most decisive players.

Aubameyang’s previous spell in La Liga came with Barcelona. After joining the Catalan club midway through the 2021-22 season, he scored 11 goals in 17 league appearances, according to the club’s own season review. His return to Spain’s top flight has started even more consistently, with a goal in each of his first five appearances.

Deportivo remain unbeaten

His equaliser against Getafe also allowed Deportivo to continue their strong start to the season. After five matches, the Galician club have two wins and three draws, giving them nine points and leaving them unbeaten.

Aubameyang, meanwhile, continues his scoring run. Five matches, five goals and a place in the top five of the scoring charts: his return to La Liga could hardly have started more efficiently.
