Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lebohang Mokoena, in conversation with Soccer Laduma, backed Monnapule Saleng to turn over a new leaf after the disciplinary troubles he endured at the club.

In Mokoena's view, the winger ought to put the hardships of recent months behind him and set about writing a fresh chapter in his career. Those remarks appeared within a special feature published in Soccer Laduma edition 1496.

What happened to Lebohang Mokoena?

Saleng's predicament has turned into one of the most talked-about stories at Mamelodi Sundowns this season. The winger joined the club amid considerable expectations, having already made a name for himself at Orlando Pirates as an exciting attacking talent. His pace, creativity and knack for producing decisive moments made him an appealing addition to a squad already brimming with quality. Yet his opening months at Sundowns unfolded far differently from what supporters had anticipated, as fitness worries and disciplinary issues disrupted his progress.

The controversy grew especially serious when head coach Miguel Cardoso went public with the reasons behind Saleng's separation from the first team. The Portuguese manager alleged that the player had repeatedly disregarded the rules and standards set within the dressing room. Cardoso also pointed to instances where Saleng failed to report for scheduled team activities. As a result, the winger was told to train on his own while the club weighed up how to handle the matter.

The most recent developments, however, hint that relations between the player and the club may be on the mend. Back in October, Saleng rejoined training with the senior squad. Cardoso later confirmed that club management, the sporting director, the coaching staff and the players had all agreed to hand the winger another chance. The coach also commended Saleng's dedication during his individual sessions and acknowledged that his conduct had grown more consistent since his return to the group.
