Nicky Butt gives his opinion on Man United's interest in Victor Osimhen!
As the summer transfer window approaches, the debate over Manchester United’s recruitment strategy is reaching a fever pitch. The club’s need for a reliable goalscorer has become an increasingly urgent topic of discussion, and a familiar voice has now weighed in with a clear and compelling case.
Nicky Butt, a former midfielder who knows the inner workings of Old Trafford better than most, has no doubt about who the Red Devils should be targeting. For him, the answer is Victor Osimhen.
The Nigerian international is currently in scintillating form on loan at Galatasaray, having racked up 19 goals and 7 assists in just 29 appearances across all competitions this season. Such numbers are difficult to ignore, particularly for a United side still searching for consistent cutting edge in front of goal.
Speaking with Paddy Power, Butt did not hold back his concerns about the club’s current attacking options. While he acknowledged the talent of Benjamin Sesko, he argued that the young Slovenian is not yet equipped to shoulder the responsibility of leading the line for a club with United’s ambitions—especially in the Champions League.
“I don’t think Benjamin Sesko needs to be replaced, but someone that’s better than him who could also raise his game,” Butt explained. “I think Victor Osimhen would be the right one… he’s powerful and quick, he can run in behind, he’s got a good touch, he can score all types of goals, and he’s good in the air.”
For Butt, the issue runs deeper than just one position. He suggested that Manchester United have fallen into a pattern of signing players based on potential, a strategy that has too often failed to deliver the immediate results required by a club of this stature.
“It’s a difficult job to recruit players and maybe you go and get someone with potential but United keep doing that and it doesn’t quite work,” Butt said. “Sesko might be ready in two or three years but not right now and certainly not in the Champions League.”
When it comes to Osimhen, Butt dismissed any concerns about the striker’s lack of Premier League experience. In his view, the Nigerian’s physical attributes and playing style make him a natural fit for English football.
“I know Osimhen isn’t proven in the Premier League yet but when you look at his physicality and the way he plays football, he can definitely do it,” he added.
With the summer window looming, Butt’s assessment adds another layer to the growing calls for United to abandon their long-term projects in favor of a proven, battle-ready number nine.
