Nigeria: Austine Eguavoen appointed interim manager of the Super Falcons

The NFF has made its decision. Austine Eguavoen, Technical Director of the Nigerian Football Federation, is taking the reins of the Super Falcons on an interim basis ahead of the 2028 Olympic qualifiers.

A change following the failure at the Africa Cup of Nations

Austine Eguavoen replaces Justin Madugu, who was sacked following the disappointing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and, above all, the historic failure. Nigeria will not be competing in the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil for the first time in its history.

The former Super Falcons centre-back is supported by two familiar faces, including Christopher Danjuma, former coach of the Falconets, and Ayisat Yusuf, a former Super Falcons defender who has turned her hand to coaching.

Sights set on the 2028 Olympics

Eguavoen’s first task is the second round of qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Nigeria, having received a bye in the first round, will face the Comoros. The two legs are scheduled for 9 and 13 October 2026 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. The Comoros side are in fine form after knocking out Sudan with a resounding 30–0 aggregate score over the two legs.

For 61-year-old Eguavoen, the task will be to revitalise a Nigerian squad keen to turn the page quickly and return to the top of African and world football.
