Official: Marcos Rojo returns to Estudiantes
Marcos Rojo is returning to Estudiantes de La Plata. The Argentine club has officially announced the signing of the 36-year-old defender, who arrives as a free agent from Racing Club. This will be his third spell with the team that gave him his professional football breakthrough.
A return to his roots for Marcos Rojo
Developed at Estudiantes, Marcos Rojo left his hometown club in 2011 to join Spartak Moscow. He then continued his career at Sporting Portugal before joining Manchester United in 2014, after taking part in the World Cup with Argentina.
The defender spent more than five years at Old Trafford, where he won the Europa League and the FA Cup, among other honours. In January 2020, he returned to Estudiantes on a six-month loan before continuing his career in Argentina. After that first spell, Rojo joined Boca Juniors, where he played for four consecutive years. He then represented Racing Club for just over a year.
A short-term contract
The Racing Club board had given him permission to look for a new destination. Estudiantes took the opportunity to bring back a player who knows the club’s environment perfectly. However, this return is limited in time: Rojo’s contract runs until the end of 2026.
The defender will therefore have to quickly regain his bearings in order to contribute his experience to the squad. This return to his roots gives Rojo the opportunity to rediscover a familiar environment and finish the year at a club that holds a special place in his career.
