Saudi Pro League: Bad news for Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr

Al-Nassr is facing a major financial crisis. According to the Saudi daily Arriyadiyah, the club, home to Cristiano Ronaldo, has accumulated a debt of over 800 million Saudi riyals, which is approximately 187 million euros. This situation now forces the club's management to rethink their strategy, especially in the transfer market.

A monitored transfer window

Still according to Arriyadiyah, Al-Nassr will only be able to sign new players if the funds are guaranteed by sponsorship contracts or generated revenues. The media also notes that several players have received their salaries late, a clear sign of the financial struggles the club is experiencing.

In response to this situation, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), owner of Al-Nassr, has decided to take control back. The current management's powers have been scaled back to better monitor spending. The PIF has also appointed an external consultancy to analyze the club's finances. Their mission: reduce costs, improve financial management, and identify new sources of revenue.

Additionally, the sovereign wealth fund is reportedly considering selling a stake in the club. Two offers are already on the table, although the PIF is said to favor a partial sale over a complete divestment.

Our analysis

These revelations stand in stark contrast to the image of a Saudi league capable of pulling off spectacular transfers. Despite the presence of superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Al-Nassr now has to operate under significant financial constraints.

If this situation is confirmed, it could have a major impact on the club's next transfer window, forcing Al-Nassr to be more cautious with their investments and to find new resources to restore economic stability.
