A life-changing decision
Before becoming a legendary figure in the stands, Fernandes led a highly demanding life in Porto Alegre.
He managed 3 restaurants simultaneously to support his family. However a sudden hospitalization forced him to drastically reevaluate his priorities. While recovering, a television commercial for the 1990 tournament in Italy caught his attention.
He immediately turned to his wife, Deborah and declared his intention to travel. She agreed, simply asking for a piano in return.
This exchange marked the birth of his incredible stadium journey.
Building a global legacy
Fernandes quickly transformed his sporting passion into a full time mission. Across 7 consecutive global tournaments, he visited more than 60 countries and attended over 150 match.
He also ensured the tradition stayed within his family. Upon returning from Italy, he instructed his 10 year old son, Frank, to learn English to serve as his future translator.
By 1994 Frank stood beside him in Pasadena watching Roberto Baggio’s infamous penalty miss fly directly over their heads.
The picture that touched the World
Despite his decades of joyful support, his most recognizable moment emerged from profound sporting tragedy.
During the catastrophic 7-1 semi-final defeat to Germany in Belo Horizonte, cameras caught him weeping while clutching a replica trophy. That image perfectly embodied the collective heartbreak of millions.
Yet, displaying remarkable sportsmanship, he handed his beloved replica to a German supporter in the stands. This gesture went viral globally earning him an exclusive invitation to a German television broadcast alongside stars like Mario Götze and Jerome Boateng.

A tradition carried forward
Fernandes bid a final stadium farewell at the 2015 Copa America in Chile revealing a secret 9 year battle with cancer shortly before his passing that same year.
However, his spirit remains a permanent fixture in international football. Following his death, his sons Frank and Gustavo inherited his iconic hat and replica trophy. They honored their father's legacy by traveling to the tournaments in Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022 holding the exact same trophy aloft in the stands.
