The ultimate super-sub hangs up his boots: Liverpool Legend Officially Retires at 31

Former Liverpool striker Divock Origi officially retired from football on Monday 8 Jun via social media concluding his professional career at age 31.

A heartfelt farewell to the pitch

In an official statement shared across his personal social media accounts, the former Belgian international confirmed his decision to hang up his boots.

This announcement arrives after he mutually parted ways with Italian giants AC Milan last December. Origi expressed deep gratitude for his journey writing that he had fulfilled his childhood dreams of playing on the grandest stages and winning the sport's biggest prizes.

He thanked his global fanbase, coaches and teammates for shaping his life both on and off the field stating that his mission was complete as he moves on to his next calling.

The ultimate Anfield super-sub

Origi’s professional career began in France with Lille but his footballing legacy remains firmly anchored to Merseyside.

Signing for Liverpool, the striker developed a unique reputation as one of the most reliable big game players in modern history. Though he rarely commanded a permanent spot in the starting eleven, starting just 68 of his 175 appearances for the Reds, he scored 41 vital goal.

He helped Jurgen Klopp's side secure the Premier League title in 2020 and later completed a brief loan spell back in England with Nottingham Forest in 2024.

Cult status sealed in Champions League folklore

What truly elevates Origi into football folklore is his unmatched knack for producing iconic moments when all hope seemed lost.

Football fans will never forget the 2019 Champions League semi final against Barcelona. Facing a daunting 3-0 deficit from the first leg, Origi spearheaded a miraculous 4-0 comeback at Anfield by scoring twice including the legendary "corner taken quickly" goal assisted by Trent Alexander Arnold.

He followed that up by netting the definitive second goal in the final against Tottenham Hotspur to secure Liverpool’s sixth European crown.

Statistically Origi boasts one of the most efficient clutch goal ratios in modern European tournament history proving to football fans that a player's legacy is defined by the weight of their moments rather than the number of minutes on the pitch.
