Signing for Liverpool, the striker developed a unique reputation as one of the most reliable big game players in modern history. Though he rarely commanded a permanent spot in the starting eleven, starting just 68 of his 175 appearances for the Reds, he scored 41 vital goal.

He helped Jurgen Klopp's side secure the Premier League title in 2020 and later completed a brief loan spell back in England with Nottingham Forest in 2024.
