From a single representative in 1934 to ten nations qualifying for the 2026 edition, the continent has witnessed a spectacular rise over the decades. The pioneers (1934–1978)

  • 1934: Egypt

For more than forty years, only four African nations managed to book a ticket to the World Cup. In 1978, Tunisia notably became the first African team to win a match at the World Cup.

Algeria opens a new era (1982–1990)

Algeria made headlines in 1982 with their historic victory over West Germany. Eight years later, Cameroon reached the quarter-finals in Italy, a first for an African nation.
