2026 World Cup - FIFA: The 7 VAR intervention rules

With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, FIFA has decided to broaden the possibilities for VAR intervention. Several new scenarios will now be subject to video review during the tournament.

Less than two weeks before the kick-off of the 2026 World Cup—the first edition ever to feature 48 teams—FIFA has announced several adjustments to the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. The goal is to enhance the accuracy of refereeing decisions and further minimize errors that could influence match outcomes.

At the 2026 World Cup, VAR will be able to intervene in the following situations:

• Validation or cancellation of a goal;
• Awarding or not awarding a penalty;
• Direct red card;
• Second yellow card leading to a sending-off;
• Mistaken identity of sanctioned player;
• Corner awarded to the wrong team;
• Attacking foul having a direct impact on a decisive action.

With these new measures, FIFA aims to boost the effectiveness of video assistance and ensure greater sporting fairness throughout the competition.
