2026 World Cup: Ghana raises concerns after another debacle against Austria
Ghana continues to struggle since securing their World Cup spot, casting serious doubts as the tournament approaches. After a heavy friendly defeat (5-1) against Austria, the Black Stars have now racked up a third consecutive loss since clinching qualification last October.
Ghana has failed to reassure since their somewhat fortunate qualification for the upcoming World Cup. Absent from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and already in trouble during the 2023 AFCON—where they failed to make it past the group stage—the Black Stars now seem completely adrift.
Since qualifying in November, Ghana has played three friendly matches… and suffered three defeats. First outplayed by Japan (2-0), then beaten by South Korea (1-0), they were routed by Austria (5-1) in a match that was meant to be a litmus test. Instead, it only highlighted the extent of their shortcomings.
A worrying rout against Austria
Up against a well-drilled Austrian side, Ghana looked alarmingly out of sorts. Overrun from the start, the Black Stars lost the midfield battle, unable to contain the opposition’s transitions or impose their own style of play.
Numerous and glaring defensive errors made life easy for their opponents. Poor marking, sloppy positioning, late reactions—these breakdowns led to avoidable goals. But beyond the defense, the whole team’s cohesion fell apart.
The midfield, supposedly the engine room, never managed to control possession or shield the back line. Up front, the lack of an attacking leader was painfully obvious. With neither creativity nor inspiration, Ghana surrendered the initiative and spent the game on the back foot, unable to mount a response.
A lack of character and response
The lack of reaction is equally alarming. After Austria opened the scoring, Ghana completely collapsed. No fightback, no tactical or mental response—a fragility that raises questions at this level of competition.
Of course, friendlies are for experimentation. But the scale of this defeat goes far beyond simple trial and error. It exposes structural issues: lack of cohesion between lines, poorly managed transitions, lack of leadership, and no clear playing identity.
A daunting World Cup group awaits
The situation is all the more concerning given Ghana's tough World Cup group. The Black Stars will face England—twice a Euro finalist (2020, 2024) and a 2018 World Cup semi-finalist—as well as Croatia, World Cup finalists in 2018 and third place in 2022. Panama rounds out a group that is anything but straightforward. In these circumstances, their current weaknesses could quickly prove fatal.
Another test on the horizon
Next up is a true test against Germany. Facing a title contender, the Black Stars will need a complete turnaround to have any hope of getting back on track. At this rate, Ghana doesn’t look like a credible dark horse, but rather a team in the midst of a confidence crisis.
Africa, meanwhile, hopes to see the return of the Black Stars who impressed the world at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, where they stood toe-to-toe with the biggest footballing nations, coming within touching distance of the semi-finals. Unless there’s a swift turnaround, this World Cup could turn into a nightmare for a squad rich in history and talent.
