2026 World Cup: Mahrez's comments spark concern in Algeria
On the eve of the clash against Switzerland, Riyad Mahrez has hinted that his illustrious journey with the Greens could be drawing to a close.
Riyad Mahrez may be heading into one of the most emotionally charged moments of his international career. At 35, the Greens' captain could be playing his final match for Algeria against Switzerland in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.
Mahrez keeps everyone guessing
Indeed, the former Manchester City player hinted at the end of an era in an interview with FIFA.com.
"It's time to give the younger generation a chance and step aside after 12 years of hard work, matches, travels, and many sacrifices," he revealed.
"I was 23, I was young, and now I'm 35. A lot has happened since then," he added.
One last dream with the Greens
However, Mahrez doesn't want to make this match about himself. After netting a brace against Austria, he admits:
"Even though qualification is the most important thing, in the back of my mind, I also had this personal goal of scoring goals."
Now, the objective is crystal clear:
"We want to go as far as possible—for ourselves, our families, and our country."
