2026 World Cup - Spain: Luis de la Fuente opens up again about Yamal
Long doubtful due to a muscle injury sustained with FC Barcelona, Lamine Yamal is edging closer to a timely return for Spain’s opening World Cup match—a scenario that brings immense relief to Luis de la Fuente, who has been deeply concerned in recent weeks.
Spain is holding its breath, but the signs are encouraging. On the eve of La Roja’s debut against Cape Verde, Luis de la Fuente provided an update during a press conference on Lamine Yamal’s fitness. The young talent had been a doubt after picking up a muscle injury late in the season with Barça.

The Spanish head coach showed clear relief.
"We were very worried. Because we knew it was an injury that could... not necessarily keep him off the pitch for three months, or even two, but this month and a half could certainly have been extended," he revealed.
He then added with satisfaction:
"The timeline we’re seeing is exceptional, both in terms of the forecasts and the quality of his recovery. We’re observing that his rehabilitation is progressing faster, he’s feeling better every day. And that leads us to believe he’ll be fully fit for the first match."
As a result, the Catalan star is now expected to be ready for Monday at 6:00 PM. It’s a huge relief for Spain, who have been counting on him to launch their bid for a second consecutive world title.
