After Mahrez's goal in Burkina Faso: Who Leads the AFCON 2025 Scoring Standings?
Riyad Mahrez continued his impressive Africa Cup of Nations form after opening the scoring for Algeria in their Group B clash against Burkina Faso at AFCON 2025.
The Desert Warriors faced Burkina Faso on Sunday evening in second round of group-stage fixtures at the tournament.
Algeria took control midway through first half thanks to their captain’s composure from the penalty spot.
Mahrez converted confidently in the 23 minute handing Algeria 1-0 lead before the break and underlining his importance once again on the continental stage.
Mahrez Moves clear at the top of AFCON 2025 scorers’ chart
With that strike, Mahrez climbed to the top of the goalscoring standings at AFCON 2025 taking his tally to three goals in the tournament so far.
He now leads the race ahead of:
- Mohamed Salah (Egypt)
- Elyes Skhiri / Elyes Achouri (Tunisia)
- Brahim Díaz (Morocco)
- Nicolas Jackson (Senegal)
All of whom have scored two goal each.
Record-breaking night for Algeria’s captain
Beyond the immediate impact on the match, Mahrez also strengthened his place in Algerian football history.
The Al Ahli winger raised his total to nine AFCON goals extending his record as Algeria’s all-time leading scorer in Africa Cup of Nations history.
He also moved clear into second place on Algeria’s all-time scoring list, now with 37 international goal overtaking Abdelhafid Tasfaout (36). Only Islam Slimani (46 goal) remains ahead of him.
