Atalanta: Lookman Floors Juventus and Forces Gasperini to Concede!
Atalanta handed a severe defeat to their host, Juventus, this Sunday, March 9, during the match held at the Allianz Stadium as part of the 28th Serie A matchday.
The Bergamaschi scored four times, with Italian Mateo Retegui converting a penalty (29th), Dutchman Marten de Roon (46th), Italian Davide Zappacosta (67th), and Nigerian Ademola Lookman (77th).
Thanks to this resounding victory, Atalanta climbs to third place in the standings with 58 points, closing the gap to just three points with leaders Inter Milan, whom they will face next week in a potentially decisive match for the title race.
Gasperini Makes Amends with Lookman
Ademola Lookman dazzled during the encounter against the Old Lady, forcing his coach, Gian Piero Gasperini (67), to reassess his judgment. Criticized in recent weeks, the Nigerian responded on the pitch, prompting his coach to make a spectacular turnaround.
After the match, Gasperini was full of praise for his forward, even mentioning the possibility of handing him the captain's armband.
"Lookman, you are an exceptional player. I apologize for everything that has happened. You have helped make Atalanta a strong team, and vice versa. My next goal is to entrust you with the captaincy," he declared.
This turnaround comes after a period of tension between the two men. Gasperini had harshly criticized Lookman, holding him responsible for Atalanta's elimination from the UEFA Champions League after a missed penalty, even going as far as calling him "one of the worst penalty takers" he had ever seen.
